Kim A. Shields, DO

Kim Shields, DO, is a family medicine physician who practices collaborative decision-making with her patients. “My goal as a primary care physician is to share my expertise and knowledge of health care in a way that meets each individual’s needs. I enjoy getting to know what each patient values most so that together we can manage their health in a way that feels true to self.”

Dr. Shields is passionate about the science of medicine and the thrill new advancements and evidence bring to the art of day-to-day patient care. “Beyond the science, I enjoy exploring the balance and intersections between physical and mental health, logical and emotional decision-making, and what we can control vs what is beyond our control.”

Dr. Shields was born and raised in Texas and attended The University of Texas in Austin for her undergraduate degree. She earned her medical degree from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. She decided to make a change and moved to Oregon for her residency in Family Medicine at Providence Milwaukie Hospital. Now, she’s made Portland her home for over twenty years. Fortunately, her sister, who works in mental health care, and her now-retired parents have all moved nearby.

When not caring for her patients, Dr. Shields enjoys hiking, kayaking, travel, casual birding, musicals, dabbling in Duolingo, and playing various games. Fun facts: she is fluent in Spanish, she is a fifth-generation family doctor (but the first female!), she plays many of the NYT Games daily, and she rides her Peloton religiously. She lives in Portland with her partner, Lisa, who is also a physician, and her three school-aged boys.

Dr. Shields is currently accepting new patients.
