Why Do You Need a Flu Shot?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends annual influenza (flu) vaccination for everyone six months and older. Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination. The seasonal flu shot protects against the influenza viruses that research suggests may be most common during the upcoming season.
The flu is a serious illness. The CDC estimates that the flu has resulted in between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations, and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010.
“We strongly recommend our patients get the flu shot every year,” said Dr. Amy Gillcrist, internal medicine doctor. “This year it’s more important than ever. The worst case scenario would be to catch the flu and COVID-19 at the same time or back to back.”
The flu and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses. Although the symptoms of the flu and COVID-19 can look similar, the two illnesses are caused by different viruses.
What is the High Dose Flu Shot?
The high dose flu vaccine contains four times the amount of antigen (the part of the vaccine that helps your body build up protection against the flu) as a regular flu shot. It is licensed specifically for people 65 years and older.
A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that the high dose vaccine was 24% more effective in preventing flu in adults 65 years and older than the standard dose vaccine.
